Bloodstar Review
April 10, 2025
Industrial Metal trailblazers that have gone under the radar of most humans. Bloodstar was comprised of Rolf Brunner (vocals, guitar, synthesizer), Micha Pansi (guitar, synthesizer) and Roland Brändli (drum machine, organ). In some vague ways this band reminds me of Hellhammer or Celtic Frost, except they perform cosmic Industrial Metal and their lyrics revolve around science-fiction (another similarity is that all bands originated in the country of Switzerland!). The debut contains a well-balanced mix of tracks with rapid and torpid tempos. "Bloodstar", "Something Else" and "World Is Dead" are as fast as a jet while "Dawn", "L'Alba Dei Morti Viventi" (a brilliant rendition of the Goblin song) and "Ten Thousand Years" are more slow-burning and atmospheric. For 1988, I think the style that this Swiss unit created here was quite special. The songwriting might not be the strongest though, as various of the tracks kind of devolve into being either repetitive or several minutes too extensive. While for some that might be a negative, I actually don't view it as much of a problem, as in this case I'd consider it to be the good kind of repetition. To most, this album may be nothing more than a mere oddity from the primordial era of Industrial Metal, but for me it's always been a treasured relic.
