Symphony X
preview  Symphony X preview  Symphony X (1994)
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
Symphony X's first album seems to be a very underrated album and album not talked about much, whereas all the ingredients are present. Progressive and Neo-classical Metal elements are as present on this release as on any other Symphony X album. One important thing to note is that this is the only Symphony X album without Russell Allen, since vocals are handled by Rod Tyler whose performance is solid, but not as good as that of Russell.   Feb 4, 2023

Diversum
preview  In the Woods... preview  Diversum (2022)
level 12 LuckyStar   90/100
Music on "Diversum" is slow, melancholic, almost mysterious. Songs are much more epic, comprehensible & dramatic than on the previous albums. The guitar work is much more focused on some classic metal riffs. In all the songs, the emotional and melodic sequence is based not on the riffs changing, but on the change of vocal parts. Although there is only one vocalist we hear three voices: two of them are clean, and the third one is harsh, almost black metal-like.   Feb 3, 2023

level 12 LuckyStar   90/100
This is 90's modern straight out Heavy Metal with some groove elements & there's lots of good songs here. The riffs and solo's are just amazing, and had Judas Priest done this album it would have been recognized as an even greater album. There are even some death metal mixed vocals on some of the opening songs. Also worth mentioning is the bass work. There's like nothing non-metal about this and wonderful Halford screams all over.   Feb 3, 2023

Dying of Everything
preview  Obituary preview  Dying of Everything (2023)
level 12 LuckyStar   85/100
New Obituary's album "Dying of Everything" is decent Old school Death Metal with great riffs, interesting songwriting and their easily recognizable own sound that s not overproduced. They focused more onto some mid-tempo tracks, however, they occasionally perform songs in a fast and energetic tempo that testifies them best.   Feb 3, 2023

At the Heart of Wintervale
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
New album has many excellent ideas and quality songs, but also one shortcoming. There are rich symphonic elements, soaring melodies, amazing musical performances, massive choir singing over a symphonic basis, joyful and epic music. Also Conti's vocal range is unbelievable and he still sings with power and chiming clarity all the high octave notes. However, I would accept more hard and riffing guitars.   Feb 2, 2023

The Answer Machine?
preview  Skyclad preview  The Answer Machine? (1997)
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
"The Answer Machine?" is one of Skyclad's best work with many great melodies, wonderful lyrics and lots of catchiness. This is where the band found a balanced sound in which the folk and the metal were both symmetrically represented, featuring the some melancholy mood. So if you like melodic, catchy, Folk Rock/Metal then this one is for you!   Feb 1, 2023

level 12 LuckyStar   90/100
First of all, the album "Folkemon" has a very good and nice cover. Well, at least I like it a lot. Another advantage of the album is, of course, high-quality and interesting music. "Folkemon" plays right down the middle of Skyclad's various styles and lets interesting fiddle ideas take over key themes, rather than depending so heavily on the rhythm guitar.   Feb 1, 2023

The Silent Whales of Lunar Sea
level 12 LuckyStar   90/100
"The Silent Whales of Lunar Sea" is Skyclad's fifth album in five years and final album for Noise Records. The overall pace of the album is pretty fast and lively, leaning towards rock in some places. New fiddle player George Biddle is an interesting choice. Her style is simpler, more rhythmic and less inclined to sweet, extended solos. Apart from the music, though these songs also show, that Martin Walkyier is one of the best lyricists out there.   Jan 31, 2023

The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
Skyclad’s debut "The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth" is an exceptional late Thrash Metal record with great ideas in every respect. Is the heaviest Skyclad album, the riffs most of the time sound thrashy, while at other times they are very melodic. The first song that really shows the folkmetal mixture we would get used to from future albums is ‘The Widdershins Jig’ which is catchy, use violins and is very folk-ish like.   Jan 31, 2023

A Burnt Offering for the Bone Idol
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
"A Burnt Offering for the Bone Idol" retains much of the Thrash Metal style of the previous album, but the fiddle is better incorporated into the music. Skyclad managed to blend folk with metal in an intelligent and reasonably complex manner and in Martin Walkyier, they had one of the best lyricist in metal, which resulted in a unique combination and excellent quality albums.   Jan 30, 2023

New album "Sky Void of Stars" consist of 10 songs & one bonus-track, that are all wroted by vocalist and founding member Jonas Renkse. Music on the album combines several musical styles, namely Gothic/Alternative/Prog. Post-Rock/Metal and sometimes walk on a thin line between effective mellowness and mild torpor with its austere atmosphere, sinister melodies and urgent pacing.   Jan 30, 2023

A question of time
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
Secret Discovery was Gothic/Heavy Metal band, founded in 1989 in Bochum, Germany. They started more in the rock genre and over time hardened and released quality, albeit lesser-known albums in the metal style. In 1995, they signed with Gun Records and record their breaking point album Questions of Time, which was released in 1996 and is the hardest in their discography.   Jan 29, 2023

Glory to the Brave
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
Hammerfall is one of the earliest examples, of what we could call the 2nd tier of the Heavy/Power Metal rebirth of the late 90s. With their very first attempt, these boys from Sweden managed to do what others have been trying in a whole career. They made an album that spits fire from its nostrils and travels you to mythical time dimensions. The storming rhythms, wonderful vocals, epic choruses and melodic parts are a guarantee for genuine, traditional metal.   Jan 29, 2023

level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
This is a great debut from the most influential and aggressive German Thrash Metal masters Kreator. For the most part, this is very fast Thrash Metal with Death overtones - especially in the riff work and vocals. Every song on here is fast, angry, and most of all evil. This is where later thrash, death and black metal groups took inspiration to set up their music.   Jan 29, 2023

"Endorama" is one of Kreator's best albums ever. It's a big change from the band's classic albums, but if the music is of good quality, has strong ideas and I like it, I don't mind changes in style at all, because I always keep an open mind when it comes to music. Great album.   Jan 29, 2023

"Renewal" is, from my point of view, the weakest album of the Kreator group, but it still contains a lot of quality ideas and good music. The sound could definitely be better quality, livelier and ass-kicking. Also, Mille's singing is the least interesting in the entire history of the band.   Jan 29, 2023

This album is so underrated!!! Yes, there is a change in the direction and style of the band, but the music on the album is high quality, interesting and really hard. The sound is heavy tonnage, the band has slowed down, but the riffs are still excellent and Mille's singing is one of the best he has performed in his career.   Jan 29, 2023

"Jugulator" is Priest's heaviest and most underrated album and it is also pretty heavy album at the time of issue. This record sounds pretty modern and open-minded. Album combines traditional Heavy/Power Metal and Groove Metal. Tim "Ripper" Owens was not a Halford copy, but he was a fine lead singer in his own right. His vocal is phenomenal and he show masterful performance.   Jan 25, 2023

"Come in From the Rain" is the best album by Andi Deris besides the home band Helloween. Album is less metal oriented compared to what Helloween are known for, however, it contains a lot of excellent choruses, high-quality melodic ideas and draws mostly from Rock's style. He combines traditional styles with some more modern and alternative flavorings.   Jan 25, 2023

The Human Equation

level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
"The Human Equation" has really great story where a man crashes into a tree and goes into coma. Each track represents one day (in total 20 days). While in coma he goes in a journey inside of him in which he comunicates or fights with his feelings and explores his inner-self. Every song on this album is great. There's a stunning amount of instrumental variety to go along with the excellent cast of characters. Album has eleven vocalists, and all are simply superb.   Jan 23, 2023

The Theory of Everything
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
"The Theory of Everything" showcases some new elements in Ayreon music, which have been hinted at yet never fully fleshed out. Album contains 42 tracks which in all reality make up four fluid songs that flow into each other. Music is much less holding for genre rules, mainly because short segments in which the album is divided quickly change styles, melodies and rhythms. The guest vocalists and musicians are in top form, as usual.   Jan 22, 2023

Ayreon's first album "The Final Experiment" is great & unique musical experience. Music takes its main influences in the epic Progressive music of the 70s that can include electronic or folk sounds, intricate guitar melodies and amazing vocals. Album covers a big spectre from acoustic guitars to flutes, from epic female choirs to heavier growls and sounds to me very authentic and interesting.   Jan 22, 2023

Anneke van Giersbergen gathered in Vuur project musicians from various known or less known bands to tap into her Progressive Metal side & the result is an introspective look at traveling and metropolitan life. It’s very good Prog. album with some really cool grooves and melodic ideas, but it still stays easy and comfortable with a powerful chorus in every song and a strong melodic side.   Jan 21, 2023

Mar 9, 2025
