Another album that is outside my taste, but again contains two catchy songs. The rest is just average.   Mar 1, 2023

The Sound of Perseverance
level 12 LuckyStar   75/100
The final studio release of the Death catalogue was again recorded with new lineup. Chuck brought his Control Denied playmates Shannon Hamm (guitar), Scott Clendenin (bass) and Richard Christy (drums), all competent enough in their roles. On the musical side, it's as if he's combining his home band with a solo project.   Mar 1, 2023
Black Sabbath
preview  Black Sabbath preview  Black Sabbath (1970)
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
Black Sabbath's debut studio album is widely regarded as the first Metal album with dark lyrics for the time of release. Album was recorded in a single twelve-hour session on 16 October 1969 and released on 13 February 1970 by Vertigo Records. Aside from the bells, thunder and rain sound effects added to the beginning of the opening track and the double-tracked guitar solos, there were virtually no overdubs added to the album.   Feb 26, 2023

Paranoid
preview  Black Sabbath preview  Paranoid (1970)
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
Album "Paranoid" is often cited as key influence for the development of Metal music genre as well as one of the earliest Heavy Metal albums. Album is Sabbath's best-selling record. Black Sabbath returned to the studio with producer Rodger Bain, just four months after the first album was released. In 2017, Rolling Stone magazine considered "Paranoid" as the greatest metal album ever.   Feb 26, 2023

Vol 4
preview  Black Sabbath preview  Vol 4 (1972)
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
Vol. 4 is Sabbath's 4-th studio album and was the first album produced by guitarist Tony Iommi and Patrick Meehan, the band's then-manager, though his actual involvement in the album's production was minimal. "Snowblind" was album's working title, but Vertigo Records executives were reluctant to release an album with such an obvious drug reference. Recording was plagued with problems, many due to substance abuse.   Feb 26, 2023

Master of Reality
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
"Master of Reality" is Black Sabbath's third studio album released as previous two by Vertigo Records. Album is now considered as one of the greatest Rock/Metal albums of all time, while on release received many negatively reactions by critics. It is regarded as the foundation of doom / stoner / sludge metal. Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler downtuned their instruments during the production, achieving bigger, heavier sound.   Feb 26, 2023

preview  Sabbat preview  Dreamweaver (1989)
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
Second album "Dreamweaver" is even better and more varied than the first. Sabbat has managed to put out some very unique albums in their somehow short career. The production is cool, thick guitar sounds & great riffs to be found inside, and aggressive energy drums. Martin Walkyier's vocals are notable too - quite harsh and aggressive, yet very suiting the whole thing.   Feb 25, 2023

History of a Time to Come
level 12 LuckyStar   90/100
"History of a Time To Come” is one of the most impressive Speed/Thrash Metal albums of its day. This is a dark, serious, spiteful record. The band sounded faster, tighter and more venomous than ever before. Martin Walkyier's vile, aggressive, but still melodic vocal style is the perfect vehicle to steer the endless cavalry of well-constructed, intense riffing. And in Andy Sneap we have an excellent guitar player, who showcases his skills with great gitar riffs.   Feb 25, 2023

Fourth Zeppelin's album commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV, was released by Atlantic Records and was produced by guitarist Jimmy Page. Band decided that album would officially be untitled and would be represented instead by four symbols chosen by each band member. "Houses of the Holy" is fifth Zeppelin's studio album and was released by Atlantic Records. Although critical response was mixed, album became a commercial success, with over 10 million albums sold. All instruments and vocals were provided by the band members Robert Plant (vocals), Jimmy Page (guitar), John Paul Jones (bass, keyboards), and John Bonham (drums). Album was produced by Page and mixed by Eddie Kramer.   Feb 24, 2023
Foregone
preview  In Flames preview  Foregone (2023)
level 12 LuckyStar   85/100
Album "Foregone" is return to form for In Flames. There is more Melodic Death Metal on this album, than Metalcore/Groove Metal, but otherwise it is pretty much what they've always been doing. It's just that this time around, most of it clicks for me. Swedes deserve a big plus for recruiting guitarist Chris Broderick, who with his high technical skills nicely colored the solo parts. I can hear bits from every era of In Flames throughout this album.   Feb 24, 2023

"Made in Japan" is live album recorded during first tour of Japan in August 1972 and became a commercial and critical success record. The band did not consider the album to be important and only Glover and Paice showed up to mix it. The band did not want the album to be released outside Japan and wanted full rights to the tapes, but it was released worldwide anyway.   Feb 23, 2023

As in Gardens, So in Tombs
level 12 LuckyStar   85/100
Album "As in Gardens, So in Tombs" is built on great ideas and melodies, with frequent tempo changes. You can hear keyboards carry the melody, varied synthesizer sounds, melodic guitar riffs and fast cannonade of drums, which together make a good brand for Melodic Black Metal. They know very well, how to compose good songs.   Feb 23, 2023
Sabotage
preview  Black Sabbath preview  Sabotage (1975)
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
"Sabotage" is a very well composed, presented and laid out album. It is truly excellent record with the original line-up before drug abuse and personal conflicts let to a first split. Sabotage might be one of the band's gloomiest and heaviest records of all times without losing the band's eerie and psychedelic vibe. Album was recorded in the midst of a legal battle with the band's former manager Patrick Meehan.   Feb 19, 2023

Aphelion
preview  Leprous preview  Aphelion (2021)
level 12 LuckyStar   80/100
Musically, "Aphelion" is an album with pleasant melancholic atmosphere by use of keyboards, lighter arrangements, soft guitar beats and polished drums. New album is bleak, introverted and coming from a place of darkness, yet full of yearning and anticipation. Even though the music is quite a bit softer than their old albums, it is quite successful. The only problem I have is with the singing, which has changed in recent years and is unnaturally soft.   Feb 19, 2023

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
As with other Black Sabbath albums, the main strength on "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" is the epic heavy riffs. But there is less of the very dark and doomy sound and there was a rapid increase in sophistication in the overall song structures and progression. You can find here some very melodic and almost symphonicparts scattered about and there is also an increase usage of acoustic guitar and keys.   Feb 19, 2023

The band had been on a long hiatus after Insult to Injury, and their return with a different sound and in a different style was a disappointment for some fans, or some liked the album more than the previous efforts. Stylistically, the band combined Power and Groove Metal. There are several new members here, including bassist Jimmy Preziosa, guitarist Warren Conditi and the new vocalist Rob Gonzo.   Feb 19, 2023

Virgin Killer
preview  Scorpions preview  Virgin Killer (1976)
level 12 LuckyStar   90/100
"Virgin Killer" wows the listener with a fresh Rocking sound and an all around tighter musical base. Songs are catchier, more polished and Klaus Meine’s vocals are great. It was the band's 1st album to attract markedly attention outside Europe. Title is described as being a reference to time as the killer of innocence. Original cover featured a nude prepubescent girl, which stirred controversy. As a result, the album was re-issued with a different cover.   Feb 19, 2023

"In Trance" is another absolute essential album and there's no dull moments on this record. This was the first of two studio albums to feature drummer Rudy Lenners, and the first album by the band to contain the now-famous logo and controversial artwork. Material is almost evenly split between two types of songs: those written by Roth and those written by Rudolf Schenker and Klaus Meine.   Feb 19, 2023

"Lonesome Crow" is the debut album by the German Hard Rock band Scorpions. In support of "Lonesome Crow", Scorpions toured as the opening act for the British rock band UFO. At the end of the tour Scorpions lead guitarist Michael Schenker was asked to fill an open position as UFO's guitarist and accepted the position. Schenker's departure temporarily resulted in the breakup of the band but Rudolf Schenker and Klaus Meine ultimately merged with the band Dawn Road.   Feb 19, 2023

I like Scorpions, but it took me a few years to appreciate their music and overall quality. "Fly to the Rainbow" is their second studio album and was their first release with guitarist Uli Jon Roth and bassist Francis Buchholz, and the only one to include drummer Jürgen Rosenthal (all from "Dawn Road" band). Three songs on "Fly to the Rainbow" were co-written with departing guitarist Michael Schenker as part of his agreement on leaving the band.   Feb 18, 2023

level 12 LuckyStar   80/100
Invasion marks the beginning of Manilla Road's long and interesting journey. It's definitely an album worth listening to, although it can hardly stand among the group's finest work. This is not nearly as Metal as the bands later work, being more of a Psychedelic Hard Rock album with few Old school Metal elements.   Feb 18, 2023
Metal
preview  Manilla Road preview  Metal (1982)
level 12 LuckyStar   80/100
This album is only 35 minutes long. The riffs all maintained an amount of Rock attitude and fervor. In terms of professionalism and technicality this is hardly what most would consider particularly excellent. But in many ways this album signifies the slight beginning of what some would term the classic Manilla Road sound. I think the sound still owes a fair amount to '70s Psychedelic/Hard Rock, whereas there are occasional hints of old school Heavy Metal.   Feb 18, 2023
Mob Rules
preview  Black Sabbath preview  Mob Rules (1981)
level 12 LuckyStar   95/100
"Mob Rules" is second Black Sabbath release with Ronnie James Dio and the magic is still alive and true. Musically, the band is going for faster numbers and tighter song arrangement, although there is no lack of Sabbath's trademark gloom and doom. Although this album is not quite as influencial as it's predecessor, it contains all the same elements that made the first album great.   Feb 18, 2023

Many fans have prejudices about the given album, but Ian Gillan is an awesome singer and the music is very good chunky Heavy Metal with some doomier moments and great guitar riffs. Music was building still on the Ward-Iommi-Butler line-up. Gillan voice, pushed the band back into their 1970's prime in terms of writing and provided a multi-octave vocal assault to many of the classic tracks.   Feb 18, 2023

Mar 19, 2025

The "Ram It Down" is a very underrated album, but in 1988 in the german Metal Hammer looked like a new classic by the soundcheck.Otherwise the "Ram it Down" and the "Hard As Iron"(with thundering riff) are great fast classic Priest songs.

Mar 9, 2025
