Holy Land Review

Probably the Brazilian rock/metal album that most defines the country. Angra perfectly captured our culture and created a mix of it all.
The funny thing about this is the track “Z.I.T.O” that everyone thought was dark and mystical, but it was just a reference to someone they knew “discovering” his sexuality.
"Carolina IV" is the masterpiece of this work. ten minutes of great riffs and incredible solos. “Silence and Distance” is not far behind. A great work by the "maestro" Andre Matos along with the great combination of Kiko's riff with Ricardo Confessori's exotic beat (Rafael talks about this in his podcast).
A different album from a genre known as “power metal”, but I think it's a great progressive/symphonic metal album. The incorporation of typical Brazilian instruments was the big idea here, more or less like Sepultura did in their “Roots” from the same year. This is almost like a way of showing the power of our culture. The acoustic parts like "Deep Blue", "Silence and Distance" are excellent. The good ballad “Make Believe” deviates a little from the album's concept (it doesn't say much about Brazilian culture), as it was created to be the most commercial part of the album, as Kiko once said (but it's still great).
This is one of Brazil's best albums, although I often prefer "Angels Cry", "Rebirth" and "Temple of Shadows" because of the glorious classic heavy metal sound of "Angels Cry" and prog/power of the other two. But I recognize that overall this is probably the best job by Angra.

Read More

Read More

Read More

Read More

Read More

Read More

Read More

Carry On, Time, Evil Warning
Read More

Read More

Angra were not quite the inventors of Symphonic Metal – that accolade would have to go to X Japan – but they were absolutely at the forefront of its development. What’s more, the style of Symphonic Power Metal first crafted on “Angels Cry” is a style that has carried on to the present day. The genres tend to go hand in hand now, rarely one existing without some elemen... Read More
